After much anticipation and a couple of delays, the Oshawa Markets have officially opened their doors to the public as of October 23rd. Formerly known as the Pickering Markets, this beloved flea market has found a new home at 555 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa, breathing new life into the old Zellers plaza.
The journey of the Pickering Markets began back in 1973 as a modest flea market within Pickering Mall. Over the years, it grew in size and popularity, eventually relocating to Squires Beach Road in south Pickering. With hundreds of vendors offering everything from food and jewelry to clothing and antique collectibles, it became a cherished weekend destination for shoppers supporting local small businesses.
However, the closure of Pickering Markets in December 2020 due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic marked the end of an era. The decision to move to Oshawa was met with enthusiasm from both vendors and patrons eager to see the market’s revival.
The official opening of Oshawa Markets was eagerly awaited, initially slated for earlier in October but ultimately delayed until October 23rd. The excitement was palpable as social media buzzed with images of long lines of guests eagerly awaiting the doors to open on that first weekend.
The new location spans an impressive 90,000 square feet, a significant revitalization effort for the previously vacant Zellers plaza. More than 250 vendors have moved into the facility, promising a diverse array of offerings that will cater to a wide range of tastes and interests.
